CIVITAS study tour in BOLOGNA

10/04/2014 to 11/04/2014

A study tour in Bologna (Italy) from 10 – 11 April 2014 will present four measures from the CIVITAS MIMOSA project that have been implemented in the city. These measures support the use of new technologies to foster sustainable behaviour and include flexible access restrictions to the city centre, 'mobility credits' encouraging a transition to more sustainable transportation, a new traffic control centre, and clean vehicles in public transportation.

Flexible access restrictions in the city centre include protecting the area from unauthorised access and improving semi-pedestrianised streets in the historic centre. A research project entitled MobiMart led to the implementation of a system of ‘mobility credits’ which reward private citizens and companies to adopt more sustainable transport alternatives. The new traffic control centre offers Bologna the ability to have a complete overview of traffic in the city and coordinate responses to accidents or congestion. Finally, the feasibility of introducing clean buses to Bologna was studied and technical specifications for a call for tender for clean vehicles have been developed.

The city’s efforts in promoting and investing in sustainable modes of transport have been recognised through a number of awards. These include the 2010 CIVITAS award for 'Technological Innovation', the European Mobility Week award in 2011, and the 2013 CIVITAS award for 'Public Participation'.

The study tour will include presentations by local stakeholders and plenty of opportunities for question and answer sessions. Two site visits to Bologna’s traffic control centre and Bologna’s city centre will also be included. The deadline for registration is 17 March 2014.
