CIVITAS ELAN - Zagreb: The public bicycle system

The public bicycle system increases the mobility of citizens in the area through more effective public transport. In terms of traffic congestion bike offers a quick and direct way to get to your destination. The public bicycle system has proven to be efficient in many European and other international urban centres. Damir Širola from the association Bicycle held a presentation in CIVITAS ELAN FORUM on Wednesday, 7 July, 2010 on the public bicycle system and possibilities of its implementation in the city of Zagreb.

• At the presentation participants had the opportunity to learn more about the following characteristics of the Public bike system:
• self-service approach - an advanced technology allows access to the system without the intermediation of staff; it is fast, simple and secure
• fast and simple process of taking a bike - user registration within one minute with the use of modern technological solutions
• bike terminal - a user takes and returns a bicycle from one of the terminals
• system based on smart technology - application of smart card and registration when using a bicycle (at Zagreb Municipal Transit System -ZET tram and Croatian Railways - HŽ station )
• density of network - every 300-400 meters
• first 30 minutes FREE - encouraging the use of subscriptions on daily and weekly basis, which allows the first half hour of the service system for free Marina Koprivnjak from association ODRAZ - Sustainable Community Development led the discussion.

After the presentation a bicycle route through the city of Zagreb was organised. Bikes were placed in front of the CIVITAS ELAN FORUM to demonstrate the use of Public bicycle system.
