Gothenburg is the second largest city in Sweden, with a population of 470,000 inhabitants (800,000 in the greater Gothenburg region). As the biggest port in the Nordic region, Gothenburg is a centre for trade, transportation and industry.

In order to develop further as an attractive regional centre, Gothenburg requires a well-functioning traffic environment that fulfils high demands in terms of accessibility, safety and environmental sustainability. The various kinds of traffic and transportation solutions must complement one another in order to create a competitive city with a good quality of life. Under CIVITAS, the city’s focus was on commercial transportation via the promotion of clean vehicles, access restrictions and freight management measures that reduce demand for transportation and make it more environmentally friendly.
