United Kingdom CIVITAS ARCHIMEDES |

Brighton & Hove is known internationally for its abundance of Regency and Victorian architecture. Over 11 km of seafront make it a popular tourist destination that attracts eight million visitors a year. The city is also a fashionable destination for European conferences, and home to two leading universities, a major regional shopping centre and some of the area’s major employers.
Brighton & Hove is seeing continuous economic growth accompanied by major developments across the city and an increasing population. This has led the city council to adopt a vision for a transport system that serves the needs of all users but minimises damage to the environment. This vision has been developed in the sustainable transport strategy within the framework of a local transport plan and in line with national guidelines. Since the year 2000, Brighton & Hove has made some progress towards this end. The number of cars entering the city centre has been reduced by 10 percent, cycling levels increased by 50 percent and there are now five million more bus passengers a year.
CIVITAS ARCHIMEDES will help to continue this level of improvement and bring Brighton & Hove closer to its vision of sustainable mobility. ARCHIMEDES enables the city to propose an integrated package of innovative tools and approaches to increase the energy efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of urban transport. Brighton & Hove will particularly focus on the northern part of the city centre where major routes into and out of the city are concentrated. The city will establish an environmental zone to improve air quality and install 10 electric vehicle charging points. Public transport will become more attractive through a personalised travel information website based on transport telematics, and through public transport information for visually impaired people.
