CIVITAS welcomes 11 new members from across Europe
Over the past two months, the CIVITAS Forum Network has gained 11 new members. The cities come from six different countries in all geographical corners of the continent.
The new additions are Fastiv (Ukraine), Lecce (Italy), Santa Marta de Tores (Spain), Hradec Králové (the Czech Republic), Olsztyn (Poland), and six municipalities from Greece.
Close cooperation between the CIVITAS Secretariat and CIVINET Greece-Cyprus was a major factor in the Greek municipalities decision to join. Some of the municipalities, like Kilkis, are currently developing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs).
The city of Katerini intends to encourage the involvement of the local community in the planning and decision-making process. CIVITAS membership will be of great value in helping them overcome their respective urban mobility challenges.
The cities who have joined are engaging in a variety of innovative mobility measures. For instance, Olsztyn had the first tramway greenfield investment in Poland, whilst the small Spanish municipality of Santa Marta de Tormes is committed to improving road safety practice among schoolchildren.
Both small- and medium-sized municipalities stand to benefit immensely by becoming members of the CIVITAS Forum Network. As well as having opportunities to showcase their work and achievements internationally, they join a Europe-wide network of peers with whom they can share knowledge and experience on clean urban transport initiatives.
