How Limassol is upgrading its walking and cycling infrastructure

The Limassol Tourism Company’s (LTC's) four-year plan to improve cycling and walking infrastructure in the Cypriot city is well underway, and CIVITAS DESTINATIONS is giving a helping hand.

In collaboration with the Limassol Municipality and Stratagem Environmental Consultants, the LTC is implementing several actions as part of an ambitious plan to turn Limassol into a smarter and greener city. Many of these focus on the city's cycling and walking infrastructure.

To expand the bike sharing system and encourage cycling in general, five bike parking facilities have already been installed. Work is also underway on the installation of five map panels in Limassol's city centre and two on its periphery.

Each of these will display nearby landmarks and special points of interest, and provide information on the time required to reach them. This will cover a number of modes, such as walking and cycling. The panels should be fully installed by the end of November 2018.

Other planned measures include new bike lanes and routes, clearer signage for cycling paths and routes, and an expansion of Limassol's bike sharing scheme. Efforts will also be made to prompt the introduction of a legislative framework that supports the introduction of cycling lanes, sets out cyclists' responsibilities, and integrates  measures to ensure their safety.

Aside from initiatives related to walking and cycling,  LTC will implement other measures to  improve quality of life and urban accessibility and reduce emissions and energy consumption. These include the promotion of electric vehicles, a mobility app with a journey planner, and electronic information signs at bus stops.
