CIVITAS MIMOSA - Making Innovation in Mobility and Sustainable Actions - is an innovative project bringing the cities of Bologna, Funchal, Gdansk, Tallinn and Utrecht
together. Using their 69 measures, MIMOSA´s ambitious goal is to work together with the citizens towards a new and innovative concept of urban mobility. |

| Description of work |
The cities of Bologna, Funchal, Gdansk, Tallinn and Utrecht have joined forces in an innovation initiative named CIVITAS MIMOSA. Together with a scientific and support team this offers a unique opportunity to collectively explore the issue of sustainable transport, a field always in need of more investigation using a scientific and empirical approach. It all comes down to the fundamental right to be mobile, which must be guaranteed to all our citizens without burdening the environment they live in with additional pressure and without having negative effects on the city's economy. Together with the rest of the CIVITAS family, our five cities are eager to demonstrate the viability of novel solutions and make them available to the rest of the community.
With seventy demonstration measures, CIVITAS MIMOSA wants to promote one guiding concept:
“ Learn how to move better, to live in better cities”
The project thus has the ambition to help shape a new mentality, whereby conscientious behaviours must be felt as rewarding, not a sacrifice as all too often happens today. Communication with our citizens then becomes a pillar of the strategy, because a radical change in urban mobility is a function of our ability to convey this message.
These concepts constitute an innovative approach that will involve the whole community, as the project name implies: Making Innovation in Mobility and Sustainable Actions.

| Expected Results and Exploitation Plans |
Bologna expects a combined 50% reduction of CO2 emissions and 80% reduction of PM10 emissions linked to a package of clean vehicles/fuels, 20% reduction of private transport by public employees, a 20% reduction of road accidents around schools and a 60% reduction of accident rate around the newly introduced 30km areas, a 20% reduction in number of mopeds and freight vehicles crossing through the Limited Access Zone, a 20% reduction of illegal street parking and a 20% reduction of invasion of reserved lanes by private vehicles thanks to new ITS control systems.
Funchal expects a 10% reduction of CO2 emissions through the introduction of local clean vehicles (mostly hybrid), a 30% increase in public transport user satisfaction thanks to the new green lanes, and considerable energy savings stimulated by the large scale eco-driving campaign and cycling promotion.
Gdansk projects a 15% modal shift from private transport to public transport, a 40% reduction of vandalism in public transport vehicles thanks to the use of ITS surveillance systems, and an associated 20% increase in customers’ feeling of security, and a 50% reduction in the accident rate in remodelled cycling lanes.
Tallinn predicts a 40% reduction of CO2 emissions due to new clean vehicles, a 7% increase in the share of public transport thanks to the promotion of collective transport, a 25% reduction of accident rates at the remodelled pedestrian crossings, a 10% reduction of CO2 emission and 10% reduction of accidents through the eco-driving programme, and a 70% reduction of illegal use of bus lanes ensured by the new video-based surveillance system.
Utrecht expects a 100% conversion rate of local buses to Euro5, a 20% increase in the use of park & ride facilities, a 80% increase in the number of schools awarded with the Road Safety label, a marked increase of cycling use thanks to the 1,500 new public bikes, a two-fold increase in the number of boat trips, and a 100% increase in urban delivery trips made through local distribution centres.
Exploitation will create and contribute towards an existing technical database of CIVITAS and other relevant projects and will integrate this database with Google Earth. This will raise awareness of the CIVITAS project and of CIVITAS MIMOSA consortium and projects. We will disseminate the results of the studies in the cities raise awareness of sustainable transport options amongst the citizens of the participating cities, generate modal shift towards sustainable transport and energy use through ‘ soft’ communications measures and campaigns, identify relevant audiences or market segments and use appropriate communications devices and media.
The Exploitation Plan aims to engage with the public and the media, both at local and national/international level, to inform them about the project and its progress, training of partners and other local stakeholders (e.g. communication workshops), and administration of communication campaigns.
