European Commission sets out next steps towards “Vision Zero” road safety goal
The European Commission has published details on how it intends to put its Strategic Action Plan on Road Safety into practice.
This includes a first list of key safety performance indicators (KPIs), elaborated in close cooperation with Member States, that will be monitored across the EU to underpin its target of 50 per cent reduction in fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.
The list is a living document that will be developed further over time and includes indicators like vehicle safety, seat belt wearing rate, speed compliance and post-crash care. Data collection will begin next year.
In May 2018, as part of the "Third Mobility Package", the Commission published the outline of a road safety policy framework 2021-2030 and a Strategic Action Plan.
The publication joins these elements together, connects them with the relevant KPIs, maps out the way forward, and for the first time employs the Safe System approach systematically at the EU level.
Urgent action on road safety is needed: more than 25.000 people die on European roads every year – a figure that has hardly decreased over recent years.
Serious inroads into this figure are required by 2030 in order to meet the EU’s long term strategic goal of "Vision Zero", namely having no deaths and serious injuries on European roads by 2050.
