Lifting up pedestrians in San Sebastián

CIVITAS Initiative

On 27 of March the Mayor Odón Elorza and local citizens inaugurated a new public lift in the Antiguo district of Donostia-San Sebastián. The installation of vertical public transport covers a height difference of 40 metres and provides citizens with a competitive and attractive alternative to the private car.

The new lift forms part of wider strategy to promote walking and cycling in the hilly city of Donostia-San Sebastián. During the CIVITAS Plus project five new lifts and one new escalator are being introduced. The height difference of 40 meters is covered in two stages. A first lift in a tower of 30 meters, takes the users 25 meters up. The tower is wrapped in a spinnaker structure, which among other functions serves to diminish the feeling of vertigo. The first lift has a capacity of 13 persons and three stops, leaving people at different heights of the hilly district of Antiguo. The second lift also has a capacity of 13 persons and covers another 15 meters of height difference. This second lift has four stops including the ground floor.
