Naxos (Greece)

The Municipality of Naxos and Small Cyclades is an island municipality with 17,970 inhabitants, located in the south of the Aegean Sea and in the centre of the Cyclades island chain. It includes Naxos and the islands of the Small Cyclades: Donousa, Koufonisia, Keros, Schinoussa and Iraklia. Due to its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, it has become a very popular destination for tourists.

The island of Naxos acts as the administrative center and the transportation hub of the island complex. Naxos is the greenest island of Cyclades, offering an important hiking network that connects the small settlements and the cultural attractions. During summer a high number of visitors arrives to the island via sea and air transport.

Regarding the Naxos island itself, the touristic flows combined with the commercial activity in the port area at the central settlement of Chora create a challenging situation for mobility that appears mostly seasonally. The island has public transportation, but this does not cover the entire island. There are a few traffic studies for the island's main settlement, Chora.

With regards to the islands that form part of the Small Cyclades island chain, they are only connected to Naxox via basic sea transport, including a series of small boats, Keros is used as a pasture with no settlements on the island. The size of the other four islands, which become very popular during the summer, means that many people bike and walk there.

Moving towards sustainable mobility is of high priority for the Municipality of Naxos. To achieve this, the Municipality is scheduling to launch an integrated Smart Transport System with Telematics Services and elaborate its first SUMP in 2018.
