Farkadona (Greece)

Situated on a rural area, Farkadona is a Greek small municipality, a pioneer and very active regarding national or EU initiatives, including mobility issues.

Farkadona is member of CIVITAS and of "WHO European Healthy Cities Network," and is additionally between the 10 established cities of the "POLIS-EUROCITIES-DG Move initiative for Safer Streets". For this initiative it has received a national Award. It is also partner or participant in several EU projects, among them: "the URBACT III – Healthy Cities", "the International Urban Cooperation" and "Horizon2020 PROSPECT and DEEDS".

The municipality has also been awarded by the Ministry of Environment for its European Mobility Week participation or for its Smart Street Lighting receiving a Best City Award. In addition its Intelligent Bus Stop was presented on the National Hackathon and has received a Best City Award.

The small cities' areas are more extended (and of course more isolated) than the big ones. These are some critical factors with a direct impact to the mobility, connectivity, transports and freights. Small cities deserve to have their critical position in the European transport policies and they have to be active in order to undertake their key role. Such beliefes support the work we have been developing in Farkadona among these years.
