CIVITAS PORTIS cities take a trip to Ningbo (China)

The CIVITAS PORTIS cities Antwerp (Belgium), Aberdeen (UK), Constanta (Romania) and Klaipeda (Lithuania), recently took part in an exchange visit to Ningbo, the project's partner city in China.

Invited by the University of Ningbo, the delegation was in the port city from 5-7 March. The trip's programme centered around an exchange workshop on 5 March. This saw partners and representatives from the cities swapping knowledge and good practice across a variety of thematic areas.

These included city-port commuting, public transport initiatives, parking payment technology, inland freight transport, Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan development, travel behaviour, and cycling.

Site visits to the Ningbo Shipping Centre, Beilun Container Terminal, the metro line at Gulou Station, the newly developed Meishan island, and the city's Public Transport Control Centre  provided insight into the city's high-quality (public) transport infrastructure. Alongside this, the delegation also saw Ningbo's high-capacitor bus fleet.

Following the visit, numerous possibilities for strengthening cooperation between PORTIS cities and Ningbo are on the horizon.

The possibility of  a Memorandum of Understanding between the Universities of Ningbo and PORTIS cities is being explored, whilst Ningbo plans to participate in the next PORTIS meeting in Klaipeda and attend the next CIVITAS FORUM in Graz.
