Valongo is a Portuguese municipality located in the District of Porto and 10 km from Porto, in the northern region of Portugal. The municipality area consists of 75.12 kmĀ² andĀ 94,795 inhabitants,Ā and it is subdivided into four parishes: Alfena, Campo e Sobrado, Ermesinde and Valongo.Ā

The Municipality of Valongo has adopted an ambitious urban mobility policy, which is not always welcomed by the population, as it involves changing ingrained habits. However, an unequivocal commitment was made, with the implementation of policies to promote the sustainable development of the municipality, including the development of infrastructure and support services for soft modes, the promotion and improvement of public transport conditions and the requalification of the road space in safe conditions. This includes the implementation of the Municipal Accessibility Plan for All and the implementation of a network of cycle paths, which minimize the impacts of road traffic, encourage the sustainable use of the car and the adoption of concerted policies at supra-municipal level.

The Municipality of Valongo approved the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan in 2017 and is seriously committed to building active, inclusive and sustainable urban mobility. The general objectives of the Valongo Sustainable Urban Mobility are:

  • Rational use of individual transport
  • Increase the attractiveness of public transport
  • Promote the use of gentle modes (pedestrian and cyclable)
  • Ensure environmental quality
  • Ensure travel safety
