Gijón (Spain)
Gijón is a city of 277,000 inhabitants, located in the Autonomous Community of Asturias in Spain, 200 km west of Bilbao. This coastal city has one of the largest ports in the northern part of the country, and sustainable transport has special importance for attracting tourists to visit the city.
According to a 2004 survey, Gijón demonstrates a modal split of 17 percent public transport, 24 percent pedestrians and 59 percent private car use. Cycling does not feature among the city’s transportation modes.

However, relying on Internet-based data sources, it’s known that Gijón City Council is investing EUR 4.1 million for the redevelopment of the Avenue de Castilla. Plans include creating an underground car park and removing surface parking places to increase space for cyclists and pedestrians.
Urban transport achievements to date meanwhile include an intelligent ticketing system in use on 23 bus lines. A new subway system, the “Metrotren” has been designed to improve public transportation in Gijón and is currently under construction.
