Vigo (Spain)
Vigo is a city of 295,000 inhabitants, located in the province of Pontevedra in Galicia, Spain. It is the 14th largest metropolitan area in the country and lies 120 km north of Porto. The city has implemented a package of measures for sustainable transport.
The modal split in Vigo in 2004 was: private cars 68 percent, pedestrians 19 percent, public transport 13 percent.
No information could be retrieved concerning the city’s strategy towards achieving sustainable urban mobility. However, regarding mobility services, there are three public transport options: buses, boats and taxis.
Vigo’s public transport services are operated by Vitrasa (Viguesa de Tranportes S.A.). The company has a fleet of 116 buses, which link the main neighborhoods and the municipality’s parishes. Its 43 routes run daily, generally from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. There are special discounts for travelers. The Green Card, which can be purchased electronically, offers a cheaper fare to school and university students besides pensioners.
Naviera Mar de Ons provides regular water-based transport services between Vigo and the localities of Cangas and Moaña, with daily departures and arrivals every hour or half-hour depending on the route. The service operates year round, and during the summer is extended to include tours and expeditions to the Cíes Islands.
The city of Vigo has implemented several measures with the aim to improve quality of life in the city. These include the designation of restricted traffic zones in the historical center with parking options offered to residents only; parking regulations on roads to enable better transit; and special transport services for school children and people with reduced mobility.
