Donostia - San Sebastián (Spain)

Since the end of the 20th century, San Sebastian has adopted a mobility strategy aimed at prioritising active mobility and public transport in order to offer both citizens and visitors a safe, healthy and pleasant environment. That is why the city has been implementing measures and policies with the aim of promoting these modes of travel and discouraging other less sustainable and less respectful means of transport in the urban environment.

The various plans that have been implemented in the city have served to consolidate the strategy set by the city in terms of pedestrianisation, with the aim of recovering this space and offering it again to its citizens and visitors with the main objective of generating habitable places and encouraging people to live in the streets of their city. This must bear in mind, of course, critical accessibility elements, such as vertical transport, an aspect of vital importance in a city in which half of the population resides in the upper neighbourhoods.

Cycling mobility has also undergone a significant change in Donostia / San Sebastián, with a cycling network of around 60 kilometres, covering both the flat and upper parts of the city. It is also worth highlighting the complementary actions that have been incorporated, such as the public bicycle rental service or the network of secure bicycle parking areas.
