According to data taken from the Transport Master Plan (2000) the modal split in Antalya is 38 percent pedestrians; 28 percent public transport (buses, minibuses and trams); 21 percent private cars; and 13 percent private bus/minibus services.
The sustainable transport management strategy was determined after the local elections in 2009. The main goals are to create a clean and sustainable environment in the city, and to develop and improve urban transportation. The city has not yet developed a sustainable urban mobility plan, but data are being collected and prepared. The main targets are to maximise accessibility and to ensure clean and sustainable transportation.
Progress in this field has been slow. There is a certain amount of resistance on the part of the private sector (tourism, commercial and private transportation management etc.) with regard to some measures such as having more public transport vehicles and signalized junctions. Innovative measures underway include a cycling network study; the introduction of intelligent traffic lights; and the drafting of a plan for an integrated public transportation system.
In order to promote cleaner urban transportation, the city has purchased 40 new, more energy efficient vehicles that use Euro 4 fuels, and is planning to add vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) to its bus fleet.
The city of Antalya works on the implementation of sustainable urban transport measures in cooperation with NGOs, the city council, Local Agenda 21, the city’s cycling association, the chamber of commerce, the university, and public companies.
