Summary

In order to achieve the lowest possible environmental impacts from farm to customer, the dairy company Skanemejerier replaced 10 vehicles in its fleet with lorries running on natural gas.Photo credit: City of Malmo

Implementing sustainable mobility

Skanemejerier is the primary dairy products supplier in Malmo and the region. The company’s environmental planning includes reducing the environmental impacts of milk transportation from farms to dairies and the distribution of dairy products from dairies to stores. This involves changing to newer vehicles that run more efficiently on cleaner sources of energy, training drivers in techniques to reduce fuel consumption, maintaining vehicles in order to keep emissions low and fuel efficiency high, and adopting company logistics, for example by changing routes to reduce the number of kilometres driven with the same load.

This measure focused on the introduction of newer heavy goods vehicles that run on natural gas, preferably biogas, and training drivers in fuel-efficient environmentally friendly driving skills.

Specific goals to be achieved between 2005 and 2008, compared to 2004, were to:

  • replace 10 diesel lorries with vehicles running on natural gas;
  • train 16 drivers in eco-driving techniques;
  • reduce emissions of CO2 by 62 percent;
  • reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides by 69 percent;
  • reduce emissions of particulates by 79 percent; and
  • reduce fuel consumption by 10 percent between 2005 and 2008.

Outcomes

Two new vehicles were purchased in December 2005, three in November 2006, two in February 2008, and three in March 2008. Driver training took place during the last quarter of 2005 and was repeated for different drivers throughout the project.
