Intermodal interchanges for public transport

Summary

Perugia Municipality recently approved a new Urban Mobility Plan (UMP). The UMP recommended a multimodal integration of the public transport system as a priority measure for the city over the next 10 years, with the emphasis on creating a network of high quality interchange stops.

Implementing sustainable mobility

The measure implementation started with an analysis of the public transport intermodality within the mobility plans. A special attention has been given to the selection of the best areas to create the nodes, and of course, to obtain the approvals from all the official bodies. The City of Perugia selected an area (Cupa) for action and a pilot project in which the previous experience can be put into practice. The detailed topographic survey, the design, the formal approval acceptance and the plan to implement the infrastructure have been performed. A tender was organized for selecting the company which has implemented the following infrastructures:

• stair linking the minimetro station and the bus stops • new bus stop in Viale Pellini • new gulf for the standing of the bus • raised crosswalk • two shelters for the two bus-stops • regularization of the curve in front of the minimetro station, • widening of sidewalks • completion of other pedestrian ways • VMS panels and the utility networks Dissemination actions have been carried out before and within the implementation phase for communicating the benefits of the measure implementation. Moreover, the Perugia mobility brand ESC (developed within a parallel measure) is implemented in all the elements of this measure.

The major objective of this measure was to create a better integration of all transport modes in the City of Perugia. Specifically, high quality interchanges between the bus network, rail stations, the Minimetro line, and the escalator and elevator systems has been created. Moreover, in order to increase the quality of the interchanges, a new telematic information system has been installed.

Progress

Prior to the introduction of the Minimetro system, the bus network was integrated with rail stations and the escalator/park and ride system. Following the decision to invest in the Minimetro, Perugia Municipality recently approved a new Urban Mobility Plan (UMP) which designed a new multimodal urban transport system for Perugia. The UMP is an essential planning tool to develop public transport integration within the city over short, medium and long terms. The measure consists in creating nodes to improve the quality of interconnection through the creation of footpaths, protected corridors, footbridges and advanced information systems.
