CIVITAS CATALIST Workshop Berlin: „Clean Urban Freight and Passenger Transport. Learning from CIVITAS Cities”

CIVITAS Initiative

In the framework of CIVITAS CATALIST, the City of Berlin organized a workshop on “Clean Urban Freight and Passenger Transport”. The workshop was hosted in Berlin on 9 May 2012 at the Senate Department of Urban Development and the Environment (SenStadtUm Berlin) and was held in German and Polish language.

The aim of the workshop was to gather public authorities and city representatives together. 17 participants discussed different approaches, strategies and implementation for clean urban freight and passenger transport. The participants represented different institutions and organizations from the cities of Berlin, Potsdam, Hamburg, Boleslawiec (Poland), Krakow, Graz and Bremen.The participants were welcomed by Mr. Burkhard Horn (SenStadtUm Berlin), head of division “Principle Affairs of Transport Policy”, and Mr. Dr. Jürgen Murach (SenStadtUm Berlin), former local project management leader for the CIVITAS TELLUS-project in 2002-2006 and head of unit “Transport Policy and European Affairs”.Mr. Michael Glotz-Richter as Lead Partner for CIVITAS CATALIST (City of Bremen) informed about the objectives of CIVITAS and CATALIST and the benefits for Bremen. CATALIST Project Partner Gerhard Ablasser, City of Graz, talked about the relevance of CIVITAS- and CATALIST - projects for the implementation of the transport and environmental policy in Graz. Thomas Zwoliński (City of Kraków, Poland) informed about the results of the projects within “CIVITAS II CARAVEL” and “CIVITAS CATALIST”, especially concerning project benefits to solve trans-port and environmental problems in a Polish city.Ms. Dr. Annette Rauterberg-Wulff from the unit “air pollution control” (SenStadtUm Berlin) spoke about environmental pollution caused by inner city road freight transport in Berlin and informed about the impact of Berlin’s Environmental Zone. Dr Jürgen Murach (SenStadtUm Berlin) informed about the outcomes of CIVITAS TELLUS Berlin and CIVITAS CATALIST Berlin and their impact on integrated transport and environmental policy in Berlin. He also talked about experiences and newly planned projects concerning low-emission transport. The present “non-members of the CIVITAS – family” took the chance for asking questions and discussing with CIVITAS and CATALIST members. The representatives of the cities of Potsdam, Hamburg and Boleslawiec expressed their interest in further information concerning becoming a family member within CIVITAS.A site visit tour informed about selected Berlin CIVITAS TELLUS measures and ongoing activi-ties, especially concerning the inner-city logistic center “Westhafen”.
