CIVITAS Deep Dive on behavioural change kicks off in June!

Deep Dive Behaviour Change

The CIVITAS Deep Dive Behavioural Change  is part of the capacity building activities that are provided by CIVITAS MUSE. This in-depth training provides participants with the latest insights into behavioural change in relation to public transport and active transport modes. The theory relating to behavioural predictors and interventions will be addressed and then applied to mobility behaviour. More details of the programme will be shared soon.

A CIVITAS Deep Dive is a learning trajectory which is comprised of a number of sessions that are connected to a defined topic. The topics of the different Deep Dives are based on the outcome of the CIVITAS European Urban Mobility Labour Market Research and topics related to the clusters of the CIVITAS Projects Exchange Programme. Behavioural change, in the context of sustainable urban mobility, was, for example, indicated as the most interesting topic by respondents of the CIVITAS European Urban Mobility Labour Market survey. Many urban mobility stakeholders who were interviewed in the context of the CIVITAS European Urban Mobility Labour Market Research confirmed the importance of this topic for their work.

The CIVITAS Deep Dive targets urban mobility professionals and students from European universities and universities of applied sciences. This training is divided into four online sessions (three content sessions and one evaluation session) as well as one in-person content session, which is being organised as a side event at the CIVITAS Forum 2024 in Parma, Italy.

The objective of a Deep Dive is to enhance knowledge about a certain topic. In addition to knowledge transfer as such, the course supports participants to start applying the knowledge in their day-to-day work. Over the course of 2024, 2025 and 2026, CIVITAS will offer a total of six Deep Dives, each focussing on different aspects of sustainable urban mobility. As these capacity building activities are aimed at a European audience, all communication and sessions will be in English.

Set-up of the CIVITAS Deep Dive Behavioural Change

Four sessions – three online and one in person – provide relevant knowledge on behavioural change in the context of public transport and active mobility modes. About two months after the in-person session, an evaluation session will be offered to reflect on important aspects of the CIVITAS Deep Dive. Following each online session, participants will be asked to complete assignments, which include self-learning materials such as video materials, available e-courses and practical assignments. Participants are required to attend the first four sessions, while the fifth session (evaluation) is optional. All participants who attended the first four sessions and complete at least 75% of the assignments will receive a certificate.

Each session has a dedicated focus based on the concept of Absorb, Do, Connect. The concept builds upon Kolb’s Learning Cycle and emphasises that learning is not just about absorbing content but is equally about doing and connecting and applying the content to life outside of the (online) classroom.

Session 1 (online) - Absorb: In the Absorb phase, participants are introduced to new information about the topic at hand by means of an expert lecture. This is followed by interactive discussion to further deepen the understanding of the concept. This initial stage aims to provide a foundational understanding of the topic, and functions to inform and inspire.

Session 2 (online) - Do: During the Do phase, active engagement and application of the new information is stressed. During the second online session, Do activities are foreseen, such as group work in online breakout rooms where participants engage in practical exercise to internalise the concept. An external expert is invited to guide and coach the process.

Session 3 (online) - Connect: The Connect session emphasises the integration of knowledge into a broader context. Participants reflect on the material, make connections between different concepts, and apply their learning to their real-world workplace environment. Again, by means of group work in breakout sessions, the Connect working format supports the connection of new knowledge to past and current workplace experiences and serves as a bridge for learning.

Session 4 (in-person, side event at the CIVITAS Forum 2024) - Conclude: During this in-person training session, the main elements of the previous sessions are summarised and reflected upon. Through interactive (group) working formats, participants are engaged and the transfer of knowledge is maximised.

Session 5 (online): Finally, an evaluation session reflects on the CIVITAS Deep Dive, the main outcomes and a follow-up.
