Four cities join CIVITAS

CIVITAS Initiative

By signing the CIVITAS Declaration, four cities have just joined Europe’s largest city network devoted to sustainable transport. They are: Torres Vedras, Portugal; Eskisehir, Turkey; Caserta, Italy; and Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

Frankfurt am Main is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany, with a population of 670,000. A major financial and international business centre, it is rated as the richest city in Europe and is well served by public transport, with two underground rail lines and an extensive surface tram system. Eskisehir, population 630,000, is a provincial capital in the northwestern part of Turkey. Situated on the banks of the Porsuk River, it is a major industrial centre, the site of two universities and home to a significant population of Crimean Tartars. The southern Italian city of Caserta, population 80,000, is a provincial capital in the Campania region. Lying on the plain at the foot of the Campanian Subapennine Mountain Range, it is best known as the home of the 18th Century Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO World Heritage site.Torres Vedras is a city of 75,000 within the district of Lisbon some 50 km south of the Portuguese capital. Bordering on the Atlantic Coast, it is home to ruins of a royal palace from which Dom João I took Cueta and thereby launched the Portuguese naval empire in the 15th century.Detailed information on the sustainable mobility efforts of all these cities will soon appear on the CIVITAS website at http://civitas.eu/cms_network.phtml?id=1812&lan=en.The CIVITAS Forum Network now includes 186 cities. It is open to all local authorities that want to share experiences in the pursuit of more sustainable urban transport. For information about joining up, click here.
