Kruševac becomes CIVITAS Member and is on its way to adopting a SUMP

The Serbian city of Kruševac joined the CIVITAS network at the end of April 2017. The city covers an area of 854 kmand is home to 127,429 people. It is the administrative center of the Rasina district in Central Serbia. The city is making significant efforts to develop its mobility and transport sectors.

In November 2015, the Kruševac City Council and the City Assembly adopted the decision to begin developing a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). The SUMP development process is currently underway, and is expected to be finished and adopted this year. This will make the Kruševac the first city in Serbia to adopt a SUMP.

Kruševac aims to achieve a modal share of “80:20” by 2030 through implementation of this SUMP. This means that citizens will make 80% of their trips by walking, cycling or using public transport, whilst car transport should decrease from the current 32% to 20%. The long-term, strategic goals are the following:

  • development of the city should take place on a human scale and in a sustainable way;
  • traffic in the city should be efficient, sustainable, and safe;
  • the negative impact of transport on the environment should be reduced.

Last year, the city of Kruševac was shortlisted for the European Mobility Week Award 2016. In addition, it was chosen to participate in CIVITAS SATELLITE programme as a visiting city.
