On the MOVE with latest CIVITAS newsletter

CIVITAS Initiative

The latest issue of MOVE, the CIVITAS Initiative’s quarterly newsletter once again has its finger on the pulse of sustainability developments across Europe. MOVE number five charts the many measures being implemented in CIVITAS cities, funding opportunities from the European Commission and upcoming events.

The fifth edition of MOVE focuses on congestion charging, with Zagreb under the spotlight in an article by guest author Marko Slavulj from the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering in the University of Zagreb. Slavulj explains the public consultation process in Zagreb and the fact that “the support of citizens and local business is a strong indication that Zagreb can become a forerunner in South Eastern Europe.”There’s a varied geographical mix in the city news section with many CIVITAS cities busy implementing effective and innovative measures. In Italy, Perugia and Bologna are working hard to make their cities better places to live. Bologna is currently testing new diesel particulate filters to make commercial freight distribution vehicles less pollutant. In Perugia, the hilly topography of the city, which discourages cycling, is being overcome through the development of a new integrated cycling strategy which improves accessibility and provides infrastructure for bike-sharing schemes. In Spain, Vitoria-Gasteiz is putting its best foot forward and has launched a simple but effective walk- for- health campaign. The campaign encourages citizens to get to know their city better, while exercising. The Danish city of Aalborg is developing links with the private sector and has signed an agreement with a portable navigation system company, which will provide up to date accurate information to road users. The city also recently launched a hybrid bus. Porto completes the city news section with news about the Portuguese city’s new Information for Mobility Support technology that allows users to plan trips using real time information. Belgian city Gent is under the microscope as the city in profile, with the CIVITAS ELAN city showcasing its successful car-sharing scheme and traffic calming measures. You can also catch up on the latest developments within the European Commission and discover funding opportunities that cities can take advantage of.To download the latest issue of MOVE, click here.If you wish to receive the electronic edition of MOVE, subscribe here.
