Walk to Work Week in Brighton and Hove
Staff at Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) and Sussex Community NHS Trust took part in Walk to Work Week, which ran from 9 – 13 May. Forty-three Brighton & Hove City Council staff signed up on the My Living Streets website and walked a grand total of 414 miles. Sussex Community NHS Trust staff trudged a massive 438 miles, resulting in a very impressive score of 10,255 points on the My Living Streets website.
Five members of BHCC staff walked over 20 miles throughout the week with Polly Stebbens, BHCC School Travel Officer, taking top spot after walking a total of 41 miles. Angela Corney, BHCC Learning & Development Officer, who won a goodie bag by signing up to the My Living Streets website said: "Partipating in Walk to Work Week has given me the incentive I needed to get back into walking to work (well, at least part of the way!). Using the Living Streets site to log my walks was fun and interesting to see how you can quickly log up the miles - without too much effort." The Living Streets Walk To Work Week top scorers for the Sussex Community NHS Trust were: Stephanie Ritter, the winner with a massive score of 767 points for her 40 completed challenges and 27 miles on foot. Meanwhile, in second place with a brilliant 751 points was Tony Reed for 28 completed challenges and 33 miles. And third with 750 points was Anne Streeter who managed 22 challenges and 35 miles. Congratulations, too, to Chris Jackson and Phil Tester who walked more than 30 miles during the week and to Kirsty Wren and Rachael Allen for completing 40 or more challenges. A Walk to Work prize giving event took place on 18 May. The finance director for Sussex Community NHS Trust John O’Sullivan presented prizes to the top three people who walked the most during Walk to Work Week. Walk to Work Week 2011 was part of the Brighton & Hove European CIVITAS Commuter Travel Plans project. The city council won £2.2 million to invest in small-scale transport projects and is the only city in the country to win European money from the CIVITAS ARCHIMEDES project for such schemes. Council officers are working with five other cities in Europe to share best practice, experience and skills.
